Perfectionism, Veganism and Ex-Vegans

Let me start this off by saying that when it comes to perfectionism, I've got about 2 or 3 masters degrees. By perfectionism of course I mean the pursuit of perfectionism, since this is a horizon-like line that continues to move further away the closer we think we're getting to it. It's an illusion, but for a perfectionist, it just means we need to work a little bit harder if we want to get there. In spite of my advanced career in the pursuit of perfectionism, several things have happened throughout my life, especially in recent years, that have thankfully put me in a state of recovery. By recovery I mean that if there were 12 step program meetings I would surely need to attend for life just to keep it that way. It's work in progress. Not only am I a perfectionist in recovery, but I'm one of those lucky ones that also happens to be an overachiever, and trust me, that is not a good combination.

Here's a look at what my thought process would be in my pre-recovery days:

Motherly Love: Heart-Melting Animal Stories of Mothers and Their Young

We've been celebrating Mother's Day in so many ways this year at Brownble, starting off with this collection of 8 mouth-watering vegan breakfast recipes for Mother's Day, or this video on helping mamas get organized in the kitchen, but today I wanted to actually sit down and talk about moms, and not only the human ones. Although we celebrate motherhood every year at Brownble, this year was extra special for me (hence all the mom content!) for reasons I'll hopefully share at some point with you regarding my own mother, who as you know passed away many moons ago. We all feel our mothers are the best ones, so I hate to sound like a broken record when I say mine was THE BEST! Even after having a disability, a serious chronic illness and facing the grueling task of raising a child on her own, she did it in the most remarkable and special way. I'm not a mother (other than to my two cutie pie furry babies), but I know that mother and child bond well. We all do! Mothers are caring, they would give an arm and a leg for their kids, they spend restless nights

I've often heard people ask why vegans or people who are concerned about animal rights don't care about human beings. This always makes me go crazy because it's as if you were saying that as humans we're only capable of caring about one thing. As if being concerned about the huge abuses done to animals prevents you from caring about human injustice or other social issues. This is certainly not true about any of the vegans I know, and many of the organizations that we support with our Brownble Gives Back program are a shining example of caring after all beings.

As you know, every month we designate a charity to be the recipient of our Brownble Gives Back program, where we give part of the proceeds we get from our members to organizations that really need our support. For the next month (and then again in a few months), we're very excited to report that our recipient is the amazing non-profit organization Heartland Farm Sanctuary, who really take that human-animal connection to a whole other level.

In order for me to present the two incredible women I want you to meet today (aka the hens), I first need to tell you a story about my mother and the trash bags. When I was 15, smack in the middle of those tough teenage years when all you want to do is fit in, my mom offered to take me and all my classmates (16 in total) on a weekend trip to our little beach house. For weeks it was all anyone talked about at school, and for a brief moment...
