Mini Q & A!: Thoughts on Whole Foods vs Processed Foods, and Vegan Companies Owned by Non-Vegan Ones

We haven’t had a Q&A episode in such a long time! Our last one was to celebrate our 100th episode in The Brownble Podcast (part 1 and part 2), and since you’ve sent me so many questions I’d thought I’d settle down in front of the mic and answer them as best as I can, sharing any additional resources that might help you on your journey.

Since I love having Q&A’s that are as fluid, casual and friendly as a fun conversation with a friend, today we won’t be having the traditional written version of this episode, but I invite you to grab a cup of coffee, get comfy on the couch and listen in.

I’ll be answering a very popular question I see come up again and again in vegan circles: Should we be buying vegan products from brands that aren’t vegan, or from companies that have been bought by non-vegan companies? I’ll also discuss a question one of our darling Sams sent our way, which is related to whole foods vs. processed foods, and some of the specific vegan dietary trends or philosophies that restrict veganism further than excluding meat dairy and eggs.

Celebrating the Little Victories

As I’m sitting in our new extra fluffy terrace chairs (which Vega believes were bought for her to choose and then you could have what’s left over), I wanted us to have a little talk about little victories and how often we’re oblivious to the small little things that scream “progress” but seem to fall on deaf ears. In last week’s episode and post we talked about little magic lessons bread and cheese making has taught me when it comes to making any new changes in our lifestyle. We talked about patience and the waiting game, how you can’t rush what can’t be rushed. We talked about the importance of repetition, planning, breathing room, and this all left me thinking that so often when we’re on this journey to change some of our habits, and especially when it comes to our relationship with food and our bodies, we expect a mountain to be climbed with no notice paid to the little rocks we managed to step over along the way.

Food Life Lessons: What Cheese and Bread Making can Teach us about Going Vegan or Starting Something New

After our previous episode and post all about the gratitude we can feel for the plate in front of us, I found myself thinking about food in and of itself. Since food and our relationship with it is at the core of what we help you through here at Brownble, sometimes I forget all about the big lessons making specific foods has taught me. Whether you’re here because you want to improve the way you relate to food, or you’re beginning a practice of mindful eating, making more vegan choices or learning how to trust your inner signals of hunger and fullness, or you’re simply here to find community, support or simply to learn how to cook vegan, so many of the lessons cooking has brought my way can help in many of these areas. It’s like I always say, the way we do one thing, is a reflection of the way we do most things, whether that’s how mindfully or mindlessly we eat, or making a layer cake.

Looking back to my past, I can now see that I probably got interested in cooking as a teen because it was such an escape from anxiety for me. In a way, I could step out of the anxious turmoil going on in my mind and I could walk into the kitchen, open up a recipe book and immerse myself in the process. Cooking was an escape, but now, looking back, it’s also a powerful way of practicing little life lessons whether consciously or not.

Fear

We’re back with our little word series this week to talk about fear. So far in the series we’ve talked about the important role patience plays when it comes to everything we talk about here at Brownble. Whether it’s the patience needed when changing the way you eat, or patience with family members around you when you’re going on your vegan journey, whether it’s an important part of being more appreciative of the body you have, going on this quest to improve your relationship with food, or to improve your own body image. It even applies to all the posts and episodes we’ve had on cooking and honing your skills in the kitchen. It’s what I’ve loved about this series so far, one little word can have so much to do with many different aspects of our lives, and each and every one of you are going to get something different out of them. After patience came the word that inspired it all and we dove into our relationship to excess and how a little mantra has helped me tremendously this year. Then came the topic of change and how we experience and deal with the many changes we might be going through when we’re on this path to feeling better right where we are, and when creating an impact in the world around us. All of this got me thinking, what is that one emotion that seems to always be present whenever we discuss any of these little words in the series? The answer?

Fear is such a powerful part of each and every one of our lives. It’s one of those basic human emotions, and for many of us, especially my fellow anxious chronic worriers, fear runs the show more often than we’d care to admit. Fear is related to all of our favourite topics here in the blog and in our podcast, so I thought it was only fair we let it have the spotlight it often craves, in our little word series.

Our 100th Episode! Your Questions Answered! (Part 1)

Having Brownble in our lives has been so strange. I can remember the day we filmed the very first video like it was yesterday. I remember the day we hit the publish button on our online program and the day the first member arrived, like it happened last week, and still, it feels like we’ve been doing this forever.

It’s been three years so far and I honestly can’t remember what we did with our time before Brownble was such a huge part of it!

I can also remember the day we started the podcast, and how Carlos and I got dressed and went out to brunch to celebrate, planning to film the announcement video when we got back from eating our vegan croissants. We left the café, and we said, let’s film it right here, right now, walking down the street (it was the most gorgeous spring day). So we then proceeded to walk up and down a street like loony birds because something kept happening every time we tried it. Finally, we got this, and you can tell I was way too excited, totally out of breath, and a total novice at the walk and film part of the equation. Here it is just for fun, just the same:

Moving Forward with Positive Changes without Shame or Overwhelm Attached

Now that The Roadmap is finally live and so many of you have already signed up and are enjoying the course, I thought it was time to discuss the topic of making positive changes and why sometimes we can start feeling overwhelmed when we realize there are so many different levels and choices within any new habit.

In today's episode we'll be talking about the wonderful changes we're all trying to make. Whether they're regarding our self care, health, activity levels, our relationship with food, our body image, etc., or whether they have to do with trying to help animals, our environment, our fellow humans. Every choice we make has even more choices and options within it, and it can be so hard to navigate this without feeling overwhelmed, and without judgement. Today I want to give you my two cents on this issue, and how we can keep the train moving forward and create wonderful changes in this world and for ourselves, but how this will vary for each of us, and why there needs to be space for that too.

I share a 3 step process that will help you keep the ball rolling with any habit change you’re trying to create, and I talk about the importance of knowing your own template. Yes, that’s right, we have a template! It can help us so much to understand it, especially when it comes to adjusting new changes to the way we are, so that they last and so we’re comfortable.

When Life Gives you Lemons: Ramblings on Self Care and Opening Up Time for it + A HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT!

Today we’re having a little informal conversation in the podcast as a kind of follow up to our Overwhelm City episode in which we discussed self care, the stages in which it leaves us when we’re under stress, and how to bring it back. Today I’m sharing a very big lesson that came to me in the most unexpected situation.

So often we’re under stress and feeling overwhelmed and we know that something’s got to give. We know we need to rest, we know we need to slow down, we know we need a high dose of self care as soon as possible, but we just can’t find the time for it.

Last week something happened to me that forced me to stop on my tracks (almost literally), and find the solution, space and time I had been waiting for.

Lessons Learned in Parks Part 1: On Going Vegan with a New Frame of Mind

If you've listened to our mindfulness episode you know I'm a firm believer in it as a regular practice. It has changed so much of my daily life, not to mention the fact that it has been my number one tool to improve my anxiety. It has brought me all sorts of superpowers including the odd feeling of the stretching of time, finding more joy and fun in the simplest of activities, the ability to go with the flow more, it has sparked my creativity, improved my cooking, made my yoga practice and my exercise routine better and more fun, but there's one super power that has skyrocketed and it has happened in a very strange and funny way, I've become an avid "noticer". By that I mean I now notice, all sorts of things, from internal mood changes and things that were triggering (meaning I can pause and think before reacting), things that caused me a ton of happiness that were seemingly unimportant before, to little tiny things like some brambles near my house that produce tiny orange flowers. I've noticed habits, preferences and adorable quirks I had never seen before in Carlos and the dogs, and I've found beautiful sentences in the books I'm reading and love, which I would have skimmed through before and that now make me think annoying Pollyanna thoughts in my head that sound like: "what a pretty sentence this is". It makes me laugh just thinking about it, but the truth is there's so much beauty in the simple details! Coming from someone who was always lost in thought and anxiety, this is like re-discovering the world, which is why I now sound like an excited five year old.
