On Changes and Patience

After our massive episode all about mindfulness last week, I kept having this thought coming up again and again and again. Carlos and his sister have this incredibly annoying habit of singing the same song for hours if anything during the day reminds them of the lyrics to that song. It drives me absolutely crazy because they just won't quit! Well, this thought was kind of like their endless singing, and it was as follows: "you forgot to talk about patience".

In fact, Out of all the support I've given you on going vegan, cooking more at home, improving your relationship with food, improving your body image and quitting the dieting rollercoaster, along with all the other topics that are regulars in our blog and podcast, we had yet to talk about patience. Especially when it comes to the topic of changes and patience.

In today's episode we'll be talking about two essential steps in making any big change. I'll also be sharing what my favorite part of brownble is, and we talk about how that ties into honesty (the type you need to have with yourself), and the importance of embracing steps back. We'll also talk about why society has forgotten to nurture patience and why people aren't practicing it anymore, along with what children can teach us when it comes to this trait, and the one thought a kid has that we can learn a lot from when facing a challenge. Spoiler alert! It has nothing to do with perfection or with being the very best right off the bat.

In My Cocoon

Hello my lovelies! Today we're having another one of our more informal/personal episodes in the podcast. That means we won't have a fully written version of this one, but you'll of course be able to listen to everything in audio format!

Lessons Learned on a Picnic Blanket in a Town of Twelve

Yes, there is such a thing as a town with only twelve people, and yes, it is as weird and as magical as it sounds. This little piece of heaven, which was right in the middle of nature, acted as a bit of a sanctuary for us recently when we took a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and headed out. Not only did we enjoy the great company and chats we had, but the dogs got to run free (as did we), we ate lots of delicious vegan food, and more importantly, this little outing turned out to be very transformative. Teaching me a few lessons along the way.

Tips for Dealing with a Resistant, Unhealthy Parent or Partner

I get it, family's tough. When we're on this journey to healthy eating and living, and especially as vegans, talking to family members can be even tougher. We've read so many books, watched so many documentaries, read blog posts and heard from the experts, and we want to quickly run to our loved ones and share what we've learned. That we've discovered the way to optimal health and that that way is through our plates. It's right when you start telling people they need to change their eating habits that the road gets rocky. Food is so personal and emotional to each and every one of us, that it's almost like asking someone to alter their entire life, move to another country or change their religion. Yes, it's that engrained, and it's so hard to try something different, especially if that something needs to be a permanent change, and not just a quick diet after the holidays.

It's especially hard if our loved ones have developed a somewhat unhealthy relationship to food, depend on it emotionally, and have started to become unhealthy. You would think that getting a scare or even just a recommendation at the doctor's office would inspire change, but sometimes it's just the opposite. Today we aren't going to talk about how to deal with a partner or family member who isn't vegan after you've already made this change (that's coming next week!), instead, I'm going to give you some tips for dealing with a parent, partner or other family members or friends who are unhealthy and very resistant to hearing you when it comes to changing their habits and their food.

The In-Between

I hinted last week that today we were going to talk about a place (or more of a moment really), that thanks to a friend of mine I've come to call The In-Between. No, this has nothing to do with weird vines, Christmas lights and creepy monsters that take over the town and steal children like the Stranger Things' "Upside Down". Sometimes though, it seems eerily similar, not while you're deep in the throws of it, but when you have that moment of realization that you've been in it, and you need to come out. It's a moment that comes right after a big event but before a new one. That can be a trip, a birthday, a new year, a promotion at work, exam time, the holidays, a big event or dinner you're planning. It's that state of "I'll get back in the groove of things as soon as X is over". For all my fellow ex-dieters, this could also be called the "I'll start the diet on Monday syndrome". For all you procrastinators it could be called the "I can do this tomorrow" syndrome. I call it The In-Between.

A few weeks ago, I was talking to a friend saying that I was in a complete and total rut. In spite of being a cook, in spite of being in the midst of testing all my holiday recipes for Brownble and all the dinner parties I host this time of year, I was in a rut when it came to my daily meals. I had days in which I stared blankly at an empty fridge, postponing my shopping trip yet again. I had days in which I had some items in there but my mind went blank so I opened the freezer door instead, only to find a bag of IKEA vegan meatballs, throw them in a pan and call it a day. For someone who decorates her own plate even when eating alone, I couldn't even recognize myself!

Bikini Revolution Part 2: The Pressure to be Thin

It's finally time for part 2 of our bikini revolution series! In part 1 we talked all about those inner body shaming voices that constantly jump out, take the reigns and put us down in an effort to make us small. We talked about the stories we tell ourselves when it comes to our self worth as it relates to our bodies, and how to change them. I also shared the four resources that helped me change my relationship with food and eating, the way I talked to myself and the way I saw my body. It's still a work in progress, but I'm working on it, every single day. It's still a work in progress because we live in an imperfect, weight obsessed, patriarchal society that insists on pushing us down when our little heads start coming up to the surface.

Bikini Revolution Part 1: The Stories We Tell Ourselves and How to Change Them

As you know, one of the main topics we cover in the blog and in our podcast has to do with improving our relationship with food and eating. Weird for a vegan cooking website, I know. The thing is, we can't talk about cooking without talking about food, and we can't talk about food without talking about the way we eat, and as you've heard me say many times before, we can't talk about the way we eat without looking at our relationship with our own body. One of the reasons why I decided to open up today's topic is because bikini body season messaging is already filling the air. Almost like when you pass a bakery, get a whiff of those baguettes and suddenly all you can think about is bread.

The Dieting Chronicles Intro (Plus a Public Apology)

I have a confession to make, and a few stories to tell you (by now you know I love going to the past and telling stories almost as much as I love eating cupcakes and I LOVE eating cupcakes). Today's stories though, are so very personal and tough, because they have to do with one of my biggest struggles, the one I've had since I was a little girl, with my favorite best friend/comfort/nemesis/I forgive you let's be friends again/why are you doing this to me/that's it your grounded again bestie: FOOD. My relationship with food though, as much as I love to eat, went hand in hand with dieting. Almost all my life. Even until recently. Hence the public apology I want to start this post with.

A couple of months ago I published three posts and three podcast episodes titled the "A Way of Eating" series. I was so happy when I wrote these posts because my intention behind them was to separate veganism from all the dogma that is out there when it comes to food rules, i.e. oil free, gluten free, soy free, clean eating, etc. These posts had a little surprise in store for me, something I wasn't expecting at all. Something that came in the form of an epiphany/ice bucket in the head wake up call that caught me completely by surprise.
