Relationship with Food Series Part 6: Happy Movement (Literally!)

We’re finally here for our last instalment of our relationship with food series! So far we’ve talked about the importance of really seeing where you’re at with food, how to navigate your past history with food so we can learn from it, I’ve shared so much of my own journey with dieting, and the huge relief and healing that came when I found intuitive eating and how I managed to find the balance between that and my choice to be vegan. I also shared so many great resources, as we discussed emotional eating, and I gave you some amazing tools to help understand our emotions, all in the hopes that food goes back to being simple (you can find all the posts and episodes in this series here).

The truth is I could go on and on with different topics and smaller aspects of what has helped me heal my relationship with food and why this is an ongoing journey, but for now I think we’ve got plenty to work with along with some of the previous series like our bikini revolution series, and our body image series. The only topic that I had yet to mention was exercise, because yes, usually, when we’re working through our relationship with food and body, we need to talk about movement.

Relationship with Food Series Part 5: Emotional Eating, Self Soothing and Meeting the Change Triangle

We’re back with part 5 of our relationship with food series, and today I’ll be sharing some amazing resources that will be so helpful on your journey to a better place with food, especially when it comes to emotional eating. We’ll be talking about how normal it is to see food as part of our coping tools (eating for reasons other than hunger is a part of normal eating and emotions play a part in this), and what can help when it has become the only coping tool. I’ll share a resource that has been enormously helpful in understanding emotions and anxiety, and we’ll talk about how there isn’t just one side of us running the show when it comes to our eating, and how we can begin to nourish the different sides of us, with and without food.

It’s not uncommon that from a very early age, those of us who have had a hard time dealing with difficult emotions, have also found our way to using food as a coping mechanism. For many of us food was associated with early rewards, or it was used to help us deal with tough emotions such as sadness, grief, anxiety or worry. For some of us the restriction of food was used as punishment, or perhaps fun foods were only permitted when we had been “good”. For some of us (myself included), food became a great way to momentarily escape situations we were not prepared to face or weren’t old enough to face. For many of us it was the way family members showed love and affection, for others it was a door to a calm space, away from difficult circumstances. For some food was where you turned to when you’d had a bad day, or perhaps it was the way your culture expressed its sense of community and enjoyment. Whatever our origin, most of us have learned from pretty early on that food is a point of connection, of celebration, of reward, and it can be a way to cope with difficult situations or emotions.

The Magical Powers of an Artist’s Date

A little over 12 years ago, right before Carlos and I were married, we were walking around Union Square In New York City and I of course asked him to go do something while I surrounded myself with books in Barnes and Noble for a few hours (as many as he’d be able to leave me there unattended… fortunately there was also a Guitar Center nearby!).

As I walked around the bookstore looking through my favorite sections, staff picks, cookbooks, and pondered whether or not I could get away with buying yet another journal, I saw a book, resting out of place on a table on top of the travel section. Someone who I will eternally be grateful to, had perhaps decided not to buy it after all and set it aside as they were passing by. Then I come along, holding more books than I can actually fit in my suitcase when I go back home, and the title just catches my eye: “The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity” (ok… curious..)… and at the top of the book a line that read “A Course in Discovering and Recovering Your Creative Self” (ok… I’m in, what’s this all about?).

At the time I was in the midst of a creative project and was feeling so stuck, it felt like one of those little signs from the universe. It’s funny, a part of me wanted to break out of that rut I was in, but the part of me that grabbed the book actually loved the idea of immersing myself in a “course” because it meant procrastinating the actual work. The joke was on me, I soon realized I was reading a book that was all about the traps we set for ourselves and how to come out of them. It’s about our old belief systems when it comes to what we can and can’t do, and putting our pants on to do the work we’re meant to do.

Food

We’re finally here, at our last instalment (or at least last instalment for now) of the Little Words series. These little one word episodes have taken us through so much of our inner world as it relates to food. We’ve talked about our feelings towards change and the patience required when making any shifts that have to do with food or anything else that might be going on in our lives. We’ve talked about our relationship with excess, labels and our way of eating, we’ve discussed fear, and one of my favorites so far, ease, and how two little mantra questions can help us so much when we’re on this journey to improving our relationship with food. I told you we were leaving one of my favorite words for last and that is of course, food.

I must say upfront that we won’t be talking about delicious ingredients or comfort food in this episode, we’re instead going to talk about the things that have been taken out of the equation and which have been substituted by rules, rigidity, worry, fear of foods, stress, guilt and punishment when not behaving as we think we need to with food. Instead of these now very common spotlights we shine on our food, we’ll be looking into some of the things we’ve taken for granted, especially in recent years.

Excess

Last week we talked about patience in this new series of episodes and posts in which we’re using little one-word mantras to help us on our journey. Today it’s finally time to talk about the little word that inspired the series: excess. I told you a couple of weeks ago how when a little Japanese woman on Netflix helped us declutter our home, I had some pretty massive realizations about my relationship to excess.

In case you don’t know who I’m talking about, I’m referring to the wonderful Marie Kondo and her Netflix show Tidying Up. A wonderful woman who turned our January into the ultimate “spring-clean-in-winter” fest. As you heard me talk about here, this process of donating bags and bags of those belongings that didn’t spark joy, was very meaningful. Not because we had the relief of having the tidiest closet we’d ever had (although that was part of it too), or because we could feel the breath of fresh air that naturally comes when you put away the last stack of unopened mail (even though this certainly happened), it was mainly because I had some pretty big realizations about my relationship to excess that had less to do with external things, and more to do with that internal world we love to talk so much about here at Brownble.

A Look Back at 2018: Highlights, Favorites and Lessons Learned

Happy (almost) New Year everyone! Today is our last post and podcast episode of 2018, can you believe a whole other year has gone by? Although I’m all for looking towards the new year and making new year’s resolutions and the like, I also LOVE looking back at the year that just passed. I love looking at the lessons learned, the roads taken, the adventures lived through, and all the fun and favorites gathered along the way.

Anxiety and Me

Hello my lovelies! So much has happened around here since last Thursday that I feel I’ve been away forever and it’s only been a week. As you probably know by now, our brand new course The Roadmap is going live in just three days (three days! Eeek!). What’s even more shocking than that, and why Carlos and I keep pinching each other, is the fact that our early bird students and members are already enjoying the course and loving it! It’s no longer our little baby safely tucked away in our little home anymore. Now it’s out there, for almost everyone and soon to be everyone to see and be a part of. It seems crazy to me that for over a year we’ve been at this non-stop, and now a whole new chapter in Brownble begins.

This journey has been amazing, exhiliarating, fun, eye-opening and full of lessons, and I can’t thank you enough because without you it wouldn’t be possible! To top things off, we’re getting ready for a big kitchen remodel around here, which you’ll all get to see in action of course, and that has meant filming round the clock so that all our content can continue to come out in spite of our house looking like the Hulk came to visit and suddenly got really angry. Add to that the normal and sometimes challenging things of daily life, and situations that have had to be resolved as they pop up, and we honestly feel like a whole new stage of life is ahead. It feels just like when you finish something really big, and now comes the calm and a new adventure we can feel coming, but can’t quite tell what it is yet. The roadmap in and of itself was a huge breakthrough for me in particular. I went to places I hadn’t been to when it comes to the way I share content and my personal views, not to mention the fact that it challenged everything I thought I could and couldn’t do.

When Life Gives you Lemons: Ramblings on Self Care and Opening Up Time for it + A HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT!

Today we’re having a little informal conversation in the podcast as a kind of follow up to our Overwhelm City episode in which we discussed self care, the stages in which it leaves us when we’re under stress, and how to bring it back. Today I’m sharing a very big lesson that came to me in the most unexpected situation.

So often we’re under stress and feeling overwhelmed and we know that something’s got to give. We know we need to rest, we know we need to slow down, we know we need a high dose of self care as soon as possible, but we just can’t find the time for it.

Last week something happened to me that forced me to stop on my tracks (almost literally), and find the solution, space and time I had been waiting for.

In the episode I also share a pretty big announcement, something that has us so excited we can hardly stand it!
