A Look Back at 2018: Highlights, Favorites and Lessons Learned

Happy (almost) New Year everyone! Today is our last post and podcast episode of 2018, can you believe a whole other year has gone by? Although I’m all for looking towards the new year and making new year’s resolutions and the like, I also LOVE looking back at the year that just passed. I love looking at the lessons learned, the roads taken, the adventures lived through, and all the fun and favorites gathered along the way.

Today we’ll sit down to have a chat about the past year, and all the things that went down around here, not to mention our favorite podcasts, films, blogs, Instagram accounts, TV shows, books and podcasts episodes that made the top charts for us in 2018. We won’t have a written version of today’s episode but you can listen in by clicking that play button above, or by tuning in via iTunes or Stitcher! You’ll find all the show notes and links to recommendations below.

Moving Forward with Positive Changes without Shame or Overwhelm Attached

Now that The Roadmap is finally live and so many of you have already signed up and are enjoying the course, I thought it was time to discuss the topic of making positive changes and why sometimes we can start feeling overwhelmed when we realize there are so many different levels and choices within any new habit.

In today's episode we'll be talking about the wonderful changes we're all trying to make. Whether they're regarding our self care, health, activity levels, our relationship with food, our body image, etc., or whether they have to do with trying to help animals, our environment, our fellow humans. Every choice we make has even more choices and options within it, and it can be so hard to navigate this without feeling overwhelmed, and without judgement. Today I want to give you my two cents on this issue, and how we can keep the train moving forward and create wonderful changes in this world and for ourselves, but how this will vary for each of us, and why there needs to be space for that too.

I share a 3 step process that will help you keep the ball rolling with any habit change you’re trying to create, and I talk about the importance of knowing your own template. Yes, that’s right, we have a template! It can help us so much to understand it, especially when it comes to adjusting new changes to the way we are, so that they last and so we’re comfortable.

When Life Gives you Lemons: Ramblings on Self Care and Opening Up Time for it + A HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT!

Today we’re having a little informal conversation in the podcast as a kind of follow up to our Overwhelm City episode in which we discussed self care, the stages in which it leaves us when we’re under stress, and how to bring it back. Today I’m sharing a very big lesson that came to me in the most unexpected situation.

So often we’re under stress and feeling overwhelmed and we know that something’s got to give. We know we need to rest, we know we need to slow down, we know we need a high dose of self care as soon as possible, but we just can’t find the time for it.

Last week something happened to me that forced me to stop on my tracks (almost literally), and find the solution, space and time I had been waiting for.

In the episode I also share a pretty big announcement, something that has us so excited we can hardly stand it!

Lessons Learned in Parks Part 1: On Going Vegan with a New Frame of Mind

If you've listened to our mindfulness episode you know I'm a firm believer in it as a regular practice. It has changed so much of my daily life, not to mention the fact that it has been my number one tool to improve my anxiety. It has brought me all sorts of superpowers including the odd feeling of the stretching of time, finding more joy and fun in the simplest of activities, the ability to go with the flow more, it has sparked my creativity, improved my cooking, made my yoga practice and my exercise routine better and more fun, but there's one super power that has skyrocketed and it has happened in a very strange and funny way, I've become an avid "noticer". By that I mean I now notice, all sorts of things, from internal mood changes and things that were triggering (meaning I can pause and think before reacting), things that caused me a ton of happiness that were seemingly unimportant before, to little tiny things like some brambles near my house that produce tiny orange flowers. I've noticed habits, preferences and adorable quirks I had never seen before in Carlos and the dogs, and I've found beautiful sentences in the books I'm reading and love, which I would have skimmed through before and that now make me think annoying Pollyanna thoughts in my head that sound like: "what a pretty sentence this is". It makes me laugh just thinking about it, but the truth is there's so much beauty in the simple details! Coming from someone who was always lost in thought and anxiety, this is like re-discovering the world, which is why I now sound like an excited five year old.

"Othered" and "Othering": Feeling Separate, Distant or Isolated When Going Vegan

After the long and way too fun post and episode we had last week in which I answered a great listener question, we talked all about my favorite books, the three books that have changed my life and our vegan library of resources, I thought today we needed a shorter but inspirational episode. Today we're going to talk about something that's behind so many of our readers' and listeners' concerns or feelings of sadness, anxiety and loneliness some people experience when going vegan. When we get your lovely questions and comments that have to do with the social side of going vegan, we tend to focus on the habits and external tips and tricks (and I sure have many of those to help you with), when it comes to sharing your life with people who aren't vegan. Today however, we're diving in deeper, because the truth is sometimes we need to go below surface level, go deep into the dark waters and shine a little light on what's really going on so we can enjoy the views of the reef down below right?

We've talked about having a non-vegan partner before, and we've covered so many of the social aspects of going vegan, as well as some of the physical and emotional changes we might go through when we go vegan. We haven't talked about how veganism in a way draws an invisible line in the sand. One that is sometimes reaffirmed and dug into deeper, when we look into the ethical aspects of making this change, or we read certain books or listen to certain advocates. This is the line that separates us as vegans from people who aren't vegan, especially our friends and family who haven't decided to join us.
