Now Vegan Me, Meet Year One Vegan Me: Lessons Learned through the Years while Being Vegan

Sometimes Carlos and I have these super fun brainstorming sessions over beers or veggie burgers in which we make a list of topics we want to cover in videos, podcast episodes and blog posts. I love getting his perspective because he always gets these awesome ideas that are really helpful and in line with the many questions we get from all our readers and listeners. Today's episode and post is entirely his creative baby. A few weeks ago we were talking about how differently we see things now, a few years into being vegan, as opposed to our first year, and he jumped up and said: "oh my God! You should make a podcast episode where your now vegan self meets your year one vegan self and gives her a slightly different perspective, based on all the lessons learned through the years!".

I know... genius right?

So that's what we're doing today, our current vegan selves are going to share how different things are now, from how we see and understand veganism now, to the kind of content we share, to the way we advocate, to the worries that were eased with time, the social situations that were handled better with time, and how they got so much easier and much more.

How Toppings Helped Me Go Vegan

If I asked you what your favorite type of ice cream was when you were a kid, would you say it was two scoops served in a cup to go? How would you answer that question? Raise your hand if you answered "an ice cream sundae with lots of hot chocolate or caramel fudge on top, chopped nuts, sprinkles, and a cherry", or, if you were anything like me, you may have answered "a banana split with three flavors, chocolate sauce and a ton of whipped cream". Toppings transport us to childhood. They mean that not only are we having something delicious, but also that at a very young age we were able to choose exactly what we wanted. We paid attention to what we were craving, and then it was all about creamy, or crunchy, or tangy, or sweet. It was the toppings that made the whole thing extra fun and enjoyable. It meant my ice cream could be different from your ice cream and that I could make the most whimsical creation that was special. Just for me.

If you've been reading our blog for a while you've probably heard about my childhood fantasy of owning an ice cream shop that only carried one ice cream flavor (chocolate! Hello!), but that had the walls lined with endless rows of toppings.

Going Vegan and the Importance of Mindset

In today's post and podcast episode, we'll be talking about the importance of mindset when you switch to a vegan diet. For the past year, in which Brownble has really grown, I've been receiving the most incredible comments and emails from you telling me about your motivations, reasons for wanting to make this change, and especially your struggles. It's in that last one where I really love to linger with you and tell you that what you're going through is normal. That it's hard to give up cheese, meat, fish, and eggs. That it's hard to make the change when you're the only vegan you know, and when often times our closest family members and friends don't understand it or support it. That it's hard to go to social situations in the beginning, that it can be a big change trying to assemble meals in a different way than you did before. That it's hard to quiet down that little voice that is second guessing every step of the way, wondering if you're doing it perfectly right.

I get it.

What I Struggled with when I Became Vegan

After years of helping people transition into a vegan diet. After seeing friends and family go through this change, experiencing my own, and seeing some people stick with it and some people go back to old ways, I can tell you this: no two experiences are alike! There are however certain common threads when it comes to that initial adjustment period, and the rest of the journey itself.

I've told you many times about all the wonderful things I experienced when I went vegan (here and here), I've shared all the physical vegan side effects I went through when I was transitioning, but only now and again have I mentioned the things that were harder for me, because of course no big change comes without its stumbles and lessons learned. Today I wanted to take you down my memory lane and share the things that I personally struggled with.

Transitioning Teens to a Vegan Diet

Today's post and podcast episode is all about teens! There is so much to say when it comes to teenagers and a vegan diet or food habits in general. On the one hand, and I find that this is the most typical, teenagers sometimes make the choice on their own to go vegan and come home to surprise meat-eating mom and dad with the news. A very different scenario happens when a whole family, including its teens, gets inspired and decides to go plant-based together. Another situation occurs when it's the parents who have decided to make this transition into a vegan diet and the teenager of the house is resistant to the change. All of these are important things to talk about, and we will, but just to get it organized, I've decided to do this in parts since these are very different from each other. We can informally call this "the vegan teens series"!
