Holiday Pep Talk! (Part 1): Dealing with the Emotional and Social Aspects of your First Holiday Season as a Vegan

We have so many new vegans on board after the launch of our newest online course The Roadmap, and although the holiday season can be especially hard when you’re a new vegan, it can still be a bit of a challenge for seasoned vegans as well. We have many past episodes in which we talk about tips and the practical aspects of navigating the holiday season as a vegan, and we have a full video on it in one of the modules in The Roadmap. Today though, I thought I would hang out with you a bit and give you a little pep talk so that you can have the most joyful time this holiday season no matter how you eat, or how differently you do so when compared to your family members and friends.

I once heard a famous author and writing teacher say that one of the best writing prompts for a class are the words “I remember…”. This immediately transports you into the land of past experiences and inspiration. I’ll be stealing this little writing exercise in that I will be looking for past experiences I have had during the holidays, and I’ll also change it to “remember…”, to give you some support. Chances are that if you’ve been listening to our podcast for a while, or you’ve read our blog, many of the things I’ll mention will act as great, quick and gentle reminders of some of those issues that pop up for vegans this time of year. If you’re new, you’ll quickly see how so many of these are universal life lessons, that you’ve probably experienced in other aspects of your life, and they’ll serve as great reminders of how to deal with these issues around the table now.

As you know, Thanksgiving was last week, and we showered you with tips, videos, links, content, in all shapes and sizes, to help you plan and cook for the big event. What we haven't told you yet, are the secret adventures we went through on that day, why my dog almost gave me a heart attack, why two people cried at our Thanksgiving, the yummy menu, the decor, and the two quick sides I made that were out of this world and that I'll teach you how to make today. Of course, there will be tons of photos, not to mention our usual lessons learned so that our holiday dinners can run more smoothly in the coming weeks.

Let me start by saying this, I LOVE Thanksgiving, and I especially love to host it because then I get to think of the decor, setting the table, making my little menus and place cards. It's almost as fun as the cooking itself.

A Thanksgiving Feast!: Vegan Versions of Traditional Thanksgiving Favorites

Can you believe we're just a few days away from Thanksgiving?! Our recent trip to London made me completely lose track of time, which meant I hadn't planned my menu, I hadn't bought the elusive pecans before the store ran out like last year, I hadn't even told the family when and where! So yes, there were a few moments of panic, rapid-fire planning, but finally, it seems to all be coming together.

In last week's episode and post we talked about those conversations that happen at the table when we're surrounded by non-vegan friends and family, and last year for Thanksgiving, I gave you tons of tips for prepping for the day, as well as some social tips for all my new vegans out there. This year, I thought we would make it all about the food! After all, what is Thanksgiving but a day that symbolizes the sharing of food together, and being thankful for the bounty nature has provided us, the fact that we have a warm plate of food on our table and a roof over our heads. It truly is a celebration of food!

With the world in turmoil and Thanksgiving just around the corner, I bet that many of us are looking forward to gathering together over a nice meal, hugging our loved ones and feeling those feelings of gratitude. Most of us have so much to be thankful for and although we can choose any day of the year to acknowledge those feelings, there's something special about Thanksgiving.

Stuffed Pumpkins with a Sage, Bulgur, Fall Filling and a Creamy Mushroom Sauce

Let's agree on one thing, all veggies are beautiful but the pumpkin kind of wins the lottery when it comes to how festive and pretty it can make a plate. These mini stuffed pumpkins make the most beautiful centerpieces for a holiday dish and we love serving them for Halloween, Thanksgiving and even Christmas. The colors just pop, and people love cutting into their own little pumpkin. It's also quite stunning to serve a big pumpkin at the center of the table with all of the filling, and ceremoniously serve everyone from it. Whatever you choose, the sweet and creamy pumpkin contrasts beautifully with what we're stuffing it with.
