The Magical Powers of an Artist’s Date

A little over 12 years ago, right before Carlos and I were married, we were walking around Union Square In New York City and I of course asked him to go do something while I surrounded myself with books in Barnes and Noble for a few hours (as many as he’d be able to leave me there unattended… fortunately there was also a Guitar Center nearby!).

As I walked around the bookstore looking through my favorite sections, staff picks, cookbooks, and pondered whether or not I could get away with buying yet another journal, I saw a book, resting out of place on a table on top of the travel section. Someone who I will eternally be grateful to, had perhaps decided not to buy it after all and set it aside as they were passing by. Then I come along, holding more books than I can actually fit in my suitcase when I go back home, and the title just catches my eye: “The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity” (ok… curious..)… and at the top of the book a line that read “A Course in Discovering and Recovering Your Creative Self” (ok… I’m in, what’s this all about?).

At the time I was in the midst of a creative project and was feeling so stuck, it felt like one of those little signs from the universe. It’s funny, a part of me wanted to break out of that rut I was in, but the part of me that grabbed the book actually loved the idea of immersing myself in a “course” because it meant procrastinating the actual work. The joke was on me, I soon realized I was reading a book that was all about the traps we set for ourselves and how to come out of them. It’s about our old belief systems when it comes to what we can and can’t do, and putting our pants on to do the work we’re meant to do.

External Body Image Triggers and Remembering We Have all the Tools

Right around this time last year I felt some familiar pangs of anxiety in my stomach. I knew where they were coming from because I felt the first wave of them when I noticed some guys cleaning out the pool in our building and getting it ready for its grand summer opening. I felt the second pangs a few days later when I saw the calendar and realized what moment of the year it was and that the weather was getting warmer. I felt the third pangs a few days later while scrolling through instagram and seeing the last remnants of my instagram clean up (more on this later), in which someone was getting "bikini body ready".

The biggest pangs came when I remembered what I had been doing to get my "bikini body" ready two years earlier and how I never wanted to be in that place again. So I did what I normally do when I know I can't go back to what I'm triggered to do, but I'm still feeling slightly anxious. 

I sat down to write.

Wellness Detective Work and Your Identity

Last week we talked all about visualization, weight loss, body image and I told you the reasons why my personal visualization is in a beach. Not any beach, but a very specific one due to the fact that it played such an important role in shaping my identity. As I promised last week I'm going to tell you all about it, not just for the sake of going down memory lane, but because it's a little exercise I want you to do too. In doing a little wellness detective work into the moments or places where your true identity was formed, lies a little gold mine that we seldom think about. It's something we simply title "nice childhood memories", and then we put it back in the shoe box with all the old photos and trinkets. Today I want you to dust off that box, leave it wide open until you find some very special tools that will help you find wellness today, wherever you're at in your life, and especially if you're currently going through any bouts of stress, anxiety or turmoil.

When our lives are calm and we reach that place of emotional wellness, all the pieces of our eating puzzle start coming together. We're able to make better choices at the table, and we're also able to set food aside and move on with a day that is filled with other experiences.

Finding your Body Image Story

If you have a beating heart, whether you're a man or a woman, a teen or an adult, chances are you've struggled with your body image or at least some part of it, at one point or another. When it comes to having a bad relationship with our own body image, the statistics are staggering, and they are growing and growing every day. Something is up. Mental health professionals are seeing it with younger and younger boys and girls with every passing year, and yes, although it's an issue we mainly associate with women, men are no exception. 

You've heard me say before, that when you're working hard in creating healthy habits that last, body image has always been swept under the rug when in fact it's a key component to healthy eating. Even more important than that, it's one of the biggest components to your mental and emotional well-being, and if nothing else, that is definitely a goal to strive for. In today's post we're diving deep into body image. We won't be talking about the enormous pressure the media, magazines, movies and TV puts on us on a daily basis to have the perfect bodies (we'll cover this in a later post), instead, we're finding another culprit. One that might be very close to home, deep within your body image story. 3 Steps to Get Back in Tune with your Body's Hunger Signals

The other day as I was following an exercise video and doing some lunges and squats, I found myself completely out of it. I was doing all the motions and I suddenly realized I had been completely daydreaming, thinking about some things I had to do that day, and meanwhile my body was following the video to a tee. I went so outside of my body and into my head that when I came back because the trainer in the video was explaining the next move, I could not for the life of me remember what exercise I had just done. Squats? Tricep dips? Push ups? My body had done them, but I had been running down my list of to do's and had no recollection of any of it.
